ECWA Hospital, Egbe, a division of ECWA (Evangelical Church Winning All), is a rural teaching hospital established in 1952 and located in Egbe, Kogi State, Nigeria. The hospital serves a 100-mile radius of villages and small towns in a poor area. It is a 110-bed hospital on a 32-acre complex that includes 5 wards for patients, 3 Operating rooms, a Maternity ward, an Under-fives clinic, an Eye care center, an HIV/AIDs counseling center, a Physiotherapy clinic, and a dental clinic. The hospital runs a 24-hour emergency and intensive care unit. The hospital has an X-ray department with digital radiology including portable X-ray, outpatient and bedside ultrasound services, electrocardiography, gastroscopy, and HSG.

Job Title: Histotechnology Scientist

Location: Egbe, Kogi

Description

Reporting to the Director of Clinical Services, the Histotechnology Scientist, often called a Histotechnologist or Histotechnician shall be responsible for preparing tissue samples for examination under a microscope to help diagnose diseases, including cancer, infections, and various other conditions.
He/she will be responsible for reporting results to the Physicians via the Electronic Medical Record system.

Responsibilities

Tissue Processing: He/she shall receive tissue samples from surgeries or biopsies and process them to prepare slides for analysis. This involves fixing, embedding, sectioning, and staining the tissue samples to preserve their structure and enhance visualization of cellular details.
Slide Preparation: He/she shall slice tissues into thin sections (often only a few microns thick) and mount on slides. The Histotechnology scientist shall be responsible for applying stains to the tissue sections, which highlight different cell structures and abnormalities.
Microscopy and Analysis: The Histotechnology scientist shall assist the pathologists to ensure that tissue samples are prepared in a way that allows them to make accurate diagnoses.
Quality Control: He/she shall ensure that all procedures are carried out with precision and that the results are of the highest quality. This includes checking the integrity of the tissue sections, making sure that staining protocols are followed correctly, and verifying that the slides are clear and accurate.
Laboratory Maintenance: The Histotechnology scientist shall also be responsible for maintaining the pathology laboratory equipment, ensuring that reagents and supplies are stocked, and following proper safety protocols to handle hazardous materials like formaldehyde and other chemicals.
Any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Must possess a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science with a subspecialty in Histology.
Must possess a valid license from the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria and Histology Society of Nigeria.
National Youth Service or Exemption Certificate.

Experience:

Proven experience of at least 2 years as a Histotechnology scientist in a Pathology Laboratory.
Must be a growing Christian.
Must demonstrate the ability to teach and train others.
Ability to use modern techniques to process and report processed slides e.g Microvisioneer system
Must demonstrate proficient computer skills and proven working knowledge of email, Ms. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and working knowledge of office equipment.
